An apple a day...

The most fights in our household are usually over a cup of milk…. when I want my elder one to drink one and she wants to have none of it! On similar lines, the pet peeve my daughters have regarding me is that most of my conversations are centered around feeding stuff to them 😊

It goes like this –

“Mom, I have an headache.“  - “You aren’t hydrating yourself enough. Increase your water intake”.

“Aai, my stomach is feeling weird.” – “Why don’t you have nimbu sharbat or some buttermilk?”

“Mumma, I couldn’t sleep well last night.” – “That’s because you did not have warm milk before bed.”

“Ma, I’m home.” – “Great, have a banana or an apple.”

…and so it goes on

I’m sure many of the mothers find making the kids eat what moms consider a wholesome diet challenging while kids find their mothers cajoling over food irritating.

Well, to solve the “what पेय / drink to have at what time of the day” conundrum, there is a shloka from the Ayurveda Sahitya that goes thus –

निशान्ते पिबेद्वारि दिनान्ते च पयः पिबेत्। भोजनान्ते पिबेत्तक्रं किं वैद्यस्य प्रयोजनम्॥

peya

It means –

निशान्ते पिबेद्वारि - At the end of the night, drink water

दिनान्ते च पयः पिबेत् - At the end of the day, drink milk

भोजनान्ते पिबेत्तक्रं - At the end of the meal, drink butter-milk / chhaas

किं वैद्यस्य प्रयोजनम् - Where (then) is the need for a Doctor?

Start your morning with at least 2-3 glasses of water. It helps rehydrate the body, increase metabolism, flush out the toxins and boosts your immune system.

Similarly, a cup of warm haldi-milk (a.k.a. “turmeric latte” to the new gen!) before you turn in at night helps in generating sleep-inducing hormones and giving you a good night’s sleep.

Butter-milk after meals aids digestion, reduces acidity, is vitamin rich and improves gut health. Depending on the season, the constitution of and any complaints faced by the drinker, it can be customized to solve the issues by adding condiments like ginger, pepper, asafoetida, mint and so on.

We have heard the “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” proverb in our toddler years itself in school and it is well ingrained it in our minds.

Similarly, learn and internalize this shloka too. Following it is not difficult and the health benefits you will reap are immense!

Well well wo the benefitbof your shloka we begin our day with 500 ml of water

And end every meal with 50p to 600 ml of Buttermilk

Cant do milk at night as i would rather avoid sleep indicing hormones. I need wake inducing hormones 24 hours
